Lilker Energy Solutions (LES) provided energy modeling and measurement & verification services for the restoration of the National Academy of Sciences building in Washington, DC. The National Academy of Sciences building is an approximately 160,000 sq. ft. structure which includes office space, lecture halls and meeting rooms as well as a kitchen and dining area. The age and historical considerations of this building provided a unique challenge when designing for sustainability. By utilizing heat recovery and variable speed compressor chillers as well as efficient lighting and glazing, the building achieved LEED certification and demonstrated a 14.6% energy savings compared to a similar building designed to minimum ASHRAE 90.1 specifications.First Photo by Jinjian Liang
