111 Eighth Avenue, the second largest building in New York City, is a 2.9 million sq. ft. property located at the apex of the Chelsea and Meatpacking districts of Manhattan. The property was originally developed as the headquarters of the Port Authority of New York. Lilker Associates was retained as one of the base building engineers, providing infrastructure upgrades, fire protection plans and alarm systems, auxiliary radio communication systems, parking garage ventilation systems and a variety of other infrastructure improvements. Lilker also was retained by a number of the building’s tenants, such as Armani Exchange, Nike, NYC Connect, Digital Realty Trust and others, to provide comprehensive engineering services. The $50 million base building renovation overhauled vertical transportation, lobbies, common corridors, power plants and fuel delivery systems. In 2010, Google, which had previously leased space in the building, contracted to purchase the entire building, in a deal reported to be worth around $1.9 billion.
